Ukraine Crisis 2022: Origins, Impact, and Challenges for the West.

On Thursday, July 14, at 3:00 p.m., in the Rogow Room, in the Transylvania County Library, Friedrich K. Jeschonnek, airborne Colonel (Ret.) of the German Army, will present the free program 鈥淯kraine Crisis 2022: Origins, Impact, and Challenges for the West.鈥 Col. Jeschonnek, pictured here, served in the German military for more than 40 years, both as a troop commander from platoon to division level, and as a General Staff officer performing German Army and NATO staff functions. Twice he was deputy commander of the German contingent in the Balkans and served in Bosnia, Kosovo, Uzbekistan, and Afghanistan. He currently leads the German Reservist Association task force editing the geopolitical 鈥淓astern European Handbook.鈥

Col. Jeschonnek鈥檚 program on July 14 will analyze Russia鈥檚 ambition to reestablish the old Russian Empire, the will of the Ukrainian people to remain independent, and the role of the Western world in the resulting conflict.

This crisis in 2022 mirrors the clashing of deep-seated national wills, intentions, and ambitions that date back centuries. Col. Jeschonnek鈥檚 presentation will explore how Ukraine (which means 鈥渂orderland鈥) has served over the years as a battleground for competing powers that included Russians, Poles, Turks, Cossacks, Austrians, French, and Germans.

Col. Jeschonnek will review Ukraine鈥檚 geographic, economic, ethnic, and cultural characteristics, and will explain how international political and military factors surrounding Ukraine have influenced the Ukrainian people鈥檚 historical struggles for sovereignty and independence. He will also comment on new aspects of warfare emerging in the current conflict as well as on the mentality of today鈥檚 Russian and Ukrainian soldiers and citizens. His observations on the Ukraine situation will be current as of July 14 when he speaks.

Col. Jeschonnek was born in the U.S. sector of West Berlin following WWII. In addition to his military education and qualifications, he holds a Master鈥檚 degree in economics and business. In retirement, Col. Jeschonnek directs seminars on behalf of the German Reservist Association and leads international reservist exchanges with Eastern European countries. He currently is conducting research into formerly secret war plans of both the East and the West during the Cold War.

Col. Jeschonnek is the father of two grown children, and he lives with his wife in Cologne, Germany. His involvement with the 约炮视频 has been facilitated by Rich Donoghue, Colonel (Ret.), U.S. Army, of Lake Toxaway, NC.

This program is offered by the 约炮视频 as part of our history series of Guest Speakers. We invite you to join us for this free program. For more information, please call 828-884-2141 or visit www.theveteransmuseum.org.

鈥淎 Marine, a Green Beret, Or Both?鈥
by Mike DiRocco

August 22, at 2pm
at the 约炮视频

How many veterans have you met who served in two branches of the U.S. Military? You can meet one on August 22. Brevard鈥檚 Mike DiRocco served our country in the U.S. Marines from 1954-1959 (sergeant) and then from 1960-1973 in the U.S. Army (Special Forces, a.k.a. Green Beret).
On Thursday, August 22 at 2:00 pm, at the 约炮视频, DiRocco will present a free program about his adventures. His two-part program includes:
– 鈥淲hat Is So Special about Special Forces?鈥
– 鈥淟iving with the Montagnards鈥

Part one, 鈥淲hat Is So Special about Special Forces?鈥 explains the origins of Special Forces from WWII鈥檚 OSS (Office of Strategic Services) and from the CIA. The green beret was authorized by John F. Kennedy鈥檚 presidential order in 1961, for wearing exclusively by Army Special Forces.

Part two, 鈥淟iving with the Montagnards鈥 will show pictures of DiRocco鈥檚 鈥淎鈥 team secretly living with the Chum and Barnard tribes early in the Vietnamese conflict. Their mission was to equip, train, and lead them against the Viet Cong. The Montagnards had been intimidated: their rice harvests stolen, their villages burned, and their people kidnapped and murdered. They were a ninth-century people with a thousand-year-old culture who were forced to live in the 20th century and forced to choose sides in Vietnamese politics. DiRocco鈥檚 team led them in the defense of their villages with much success.

Mike DiRocco was born of Italian immigrants in New Jersey. He spoke only Italian until age six or seven. Then he learned English and made money by shining shoes at five cents a pair in a shoe repair shop and began learning a trade. Young DiRocco built his first miniature submarine from WWII surplus parts using an oversize aircraft fuel tank (almost drowned as it immediately sank). His next project was to build a SCUBA rig from WWII surplus parts.

In the Marines, DiRocco went around the world several times, serving as a tank commander and Italian interpreter for NATO and the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. Then he joined the Army exclusively for Special Forces, fluently speaking three languages. While in Special Forces, he completed both the German mountain-climbing school, and the Italian mountain and glacier-climbing school, and earned an INTERNATIONAL SCUBA certification. As a member of the Italian Underwater Society, he led a combined expedition military and society divers to ancient Roman galleons, recovering artifacts for the Italian Bureau of Antiquities off the coast of Italy. (DiRocco鈥檚 full story will appear in the book, Welcome 约炮视频, Brother by Michel Robertson, to be published this fall.)

Badly wounded in Vietnam, he painfully learned to walk again after returning to the U.S. He began a new career and business in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He earned commercial pilot鈥檚 licenses in both the U.S. and in Germany. DiRocco wrote and published the nonfiction book Fire Your Protective Lines, which was well-received in both the U.S. military community and in Australia.

Mike and his wife, Maggie, were the owners of Chianti鈥檚 Restaurant in Pisgah Forest for many years. They now volunteer for Brevard Music Center and the 约炮视频.

The museum鈥檚 monthly programs are well-attended; please arrive early for your choice of seating.聽 For more information please call 828-884-2141
